Verbos

There is / There are: cómo decir que algo existe en inglés

Nivel A1 Verbos
Idea clave

En inglés, para decir que algo existe o está presente se usa la estructura there is + singular y there are + plural: "There is a problem" o "There are two beds". En preguntas se invierte el orden: "Is there a bank near here?".

Ejemplos

  • There is a problem. a problem exists
  • There are two beds. two beds exist in the room
  • Is there a bank near here? asking if a bank exists nearby

La lección completa

Todo lo del vídeo, en texto.

  1. there is / there are

    decir qué existe

¿There is three chairs? Suena bien, pero está mal.

  2. there is + una cosa. there are + muchas cosas.

Para decir que algo existe, el inglés usa una frase fija: there is o there are.

  3. ¿Singular o plural?

    there is
    • una cosa
    • sustantivo singular
    • there's (forma corta)
    there are
    • más de una
    • sustantivo plural
    • dos, tres, muchas…

La regla es sencilla. There is va con un sustantivo en singular: una cosa. There are va con un sustantivo en plural: más de una.

  4. There is a problem.

    singular

Empecemos fácil. Existe una cosa, así que usamos there is. There is a problem.

  5. There are two beds.

    plural

¿Dos cosas? El sustantivo pasa a plural, así que cambiamos a there are. There are two beds.

  6. There's a café on the corner.

    there is → there's

Al hablar a diario, there is casi siempre se reduce a there's. There's a café on the corner.

  7. There isn't any milk.

    negativo: isn't / aren't

Para decir que algo falta, ve a la negación: there isn't para una, there aren't para muchas. There isn't any milk.

  8. Is there a bank near here?

    pregunta: verbo primero

Para preguntar, invierte el orden y pon el verbo primero: is there o are there. Is there a bank near here?

  10. There is three chairs. el verbo no concuerda con el sustantivo
There are three chairs. plural → there are

  11. There are some people there.

There are some people there.

  12. There is some water in the bottle.

    incontable → singular

Un matiz más. Con cosas incontables como el agua o la leche, trátalas como singular: there is. There is some water in the bottle.

  13. Recuerda

    • there is → una cosa (singular)
    • there are → más de una (plural)
    • ‘there’ es un comodín, no un lugar

Recuerda: there is para una cosa, there are para más, y concuerda el verbo con el sustantivo, no con there.
