Pridevi

Pridev se menja po padežima zajedno sa imenicom

Nivo A2 Pridevi
Ključna ideja

U srpskom jeziku pridev se slaže sa imenicom u rodu, broju i padežu. To znači da pridev i imenica idu zajedno: kada imenica promeni padež i dobije svoj padežni nastavak, pridev ispred nje takođe menja oblik i dobija odgovarajući nastavak. Pridevska promena (pridevska deklinacija) zato nije ista kao imenička — pridev ima svoje nastavke, ali ih usklađuje sa rodom, brojem i padežom imenice uz koju stoji. Krenimo od osnovnog, rečničkog oblika. U nominativu kažemo veliki grad. Čim sintagmu stavimo u lokativ, menjaju se obe reči: u velikom gradu. Oblik velikom nije slučajan — on prati gradu. Upravo tu nastaje najčešća greška: govornik promeni imenicu, a pridev ostavi u nominativu. Pogrešno: u veliki grad. Pravilno: u velikom gradu. Zapamtite ovaj par kao putokaz — ako je imenica „otišla“ u padež, pridev mora za njom. Pogledajmo i ostale padeže. Akuzativ ženskog roda: Vidim veliku kuću. — i pridev i imenica dobijaju nastavak -u.

  1. veliki → velikom

    adjectives take cases too

Here is the mistake that gives almost every learner away: you change the noun for the case, but you leave the adjective sitting in its dictionary form.

  2. The adjective takes the same case as its noun.

You already know nouns change their endings for the cases. The key idea today is that the adjective in front of the noun must change right along with it. They move as a pair.

  3. An adjective must match its noun in

    you already do this
    • gender
    • number
    add this
    • case
    • the case ending

An adjective already agrees in gender. Now add the second job: it also carries the case. So a single adjective has to match its noun in gender, in number, and in case, all at once.

  4. veliki grad

    nominative — base form

Start from the dictionary form, the nominative. A big city is veliki grad. Both words are in their base form here.

  5. u velikom gradu

    locative — both decline

Now put it inside a phrase that needs the locative — in the big city. The noun shifts to gradu, and notice the adjective shifts too, to velikom. Both endings change together.

  6. Vidim veliku kuću.

    accusative feminine

Take a direct object now. I see a big house. House is feminine, so in the accusative it becomes kuću, and the adjective follows into the feminine accusative: Vidim veliku kuću.

  7. iz starog grada

    genitive masculine

Try the genitive, the case of from and of. From the old town is iz starog grada. The adjective takes the genitive ending starog, right beside the noun.

  8. Imam novu kolu.

    accusative feminine

It works for any adjective, not just size. With a new car, the noun is feminine, so a new car in the accusative is novu kolu.

  9. sa dobrim prijateljem

    instrumental masculine

And it scales with prepositions that drive a case. With a good friend uses the instrumental, and again both words shift: sa dobrim prijateljem.

  10. u veliki grad adjective left in nominative
u velikom gradu both words in the locative

If the noun takes a case, the adjective takes the very same case.

Here is the trap to avoid. Learners decline the noun but leave the adjective frozen in the nominative. In the big city is not u veliki grad with a stranded adjective. It is u velikom gradu.

  11. Decline the adjective and noun together, as one phrase.

A simple habit fixes this for good. Don't decline the noun on its own. Decline the whole phrase as one unit, adjective and noun together, and let both endings land in the same case.

  12. Remember

    • The adjective takes its noun's case
    • Match gender, number and case
    • Decline the phrase as one pair

So remember: the adjective always carries the same case as its noun. Match gender, number, and case, and decline the phrase as a pair. Get that, and described nouns in any case will sound right.
