Epäsuora kerronta englanniksi: kun aikamuoto siirtyy taaksepäin

Kun kerrot jälkikäteen, mitä joku sanoi, englannissa aikamuoto siirtyy yleensä yhden askeleen taaksepäin: preesens muuttuu imperfektiksi, will muuttuu would-muodoksi ja can muuttuu could-muodoksi. Lauseesta "I am busy" tulee "He said (that) he was busy", lauseesta "I will call" tulee "She told me she would call" ja lauseesta "we can help" tulee "They said they could help". Huomaa, että that on vapaaehtoinen ja sen voi jättää pois. Tässä suomi ja englanti eroavat: suomessa sanomme "Hän sanoi, että hän on kiireinen" ilman aikamuodon siirtoa, joten muista vaihtaa englannissa myös pronominit ja ajan sanat (here -> there, tomorrow -> the next day).

    Kun kerrot, mitä joku sanoi, siirrät yleensä aikamuotoa askeleen taaksepäin menneeseen. Sitä kutsutaan backshiftiksi.

    Alkuperäiset sanat olivat totta sillä hetkellä. Kun kerrot ne myöhemmin, etäältä, osoitat etäisyyden siirtämällä verbiä taaksepäin.

  4. He said (that) he was busy.

    am → was

    Aloita helposti. Hän sanoi: I am busy. Preesens muuttuu menneeksi, ja I muuttuu he. He said (that) he was busy.

  5. She told me she would call.

    will → would

    Will siirtyy muotoon would. Hän sanoi: I will call. She told me she would call.

  6. They said they could help.

    can → could

    Can siirtyy muotoon could. He sanoivat: We can help. They said they could help.

  7. said vs told

    said
    • He said he was late.

    Huomaa kaksi pientä sanaa. Said ei tarvitse henkilöä. Told tarvitsee: kerrot jollekulle jotain.

  8. She said she would leave the next day.

    tomorrow → the next day

    Aikasanat muuttuvat myös. Tomorrow, myöhemmin kerrottuna, muuttuu the next day. She said she would leave the next day.

  9. He said he liked it there.

    here → there

    Ja paikkasanat. Here muuttuu there, kun kerrot sen toisaalta. He said he liked it there.

  10. ✗ She said she is tired. aikamuotoa ei siirretty
    ✓ She said she was tired. is → was

    Kerronta menneessä? Siirrä verbikin taaksepäin.

    Tässä on klassinen virhe. Kerronta on menneessä, joten älä jätä verbiä preesensiin. Ei she said she is tired: siirrä se taaksepäin.

    Yksi vivahde. Jos se on yhä totta nyt, asia joka ei ole muuttunut, voit pitää preesensin. He said he lives in Rome on ok.

  12. "That" is optional — keep it or drop it.

    Ja pikkusana that on aina valinnainen. Pidä se tai jätä pois: kumpikin käy.
